Salon blanc originated one evening in 2007 as an independent initiative of Els Wuyts and Yves Velter, who temporarily transformed part of their home into a small-scale exhibition space. Each time the duration is limited to one moment, giving it a festive character with a private accent, a contemporary reference to the salon culture of yesteryear creating an opportunity to catch up, exchange, show and watch. 15 years, 50 editions and nearly 100 artists later, we look back, and forward.

In the exhibition ‘Lightness’, lightness and dexterity call the shots. Lightness as an antonym of heaviness, as a source of brightness. Lightness as the ability to move. Lightness seen as fluidity.

The show is supported by the idea that its mobility enables art to escape from the clutches of negative forces. So, behind that lightness, there is an alertness too.

This presentation visualizes a kind of fluidity whereby defenseless art can slip between the fingers of evil's clenched fist.

I'm sure there are synonyms that cast the title in a negative or negligible light but that is in no way the point here. The exhibition aims to be a statement of positivism, awareness and persistence. In the back of our minds we cherish the thought that no matter what, art never gives in, always germinates, rises again and shoots out of the ground where the enemy does not expect it. To the benefit of us all.

? Trees De Mits, 2022

According to Heidegger, works of art have the capacity to show things as they are by isolating them from their everyday unremarkability. In doing so, Heidegger separates the magical from the everyday, but also argues that the magical could be located among the everyday. Could this have something to do with the enthusiasm for everyday objects such as pots, bowls, vases, plates, ... ? Trees De Mits, 2022

The goal of this gallery is to present a number of interesting young artists who are producing “hermeneutic works of art,” that is, works meant to inject meaning into a world that has been changed too quickly. This meaning implies a participation where truth is claimed rather than found in order to disclose new realms of understanding. Santiago Zabala, 2022

Spatial drawing in Color

05th November 2022
18:00 IST

The Line is a fundamental element in Johan Gelper’s sculptures - whether it is the flowing curved contours of his “demountable spatial drawings” or the constructed found materials of his “botanicals.” His demountable drawings in space become energetic open sculptures as we walk around them and take in their movement. These forms are created through careful exploration, observation and sensing of the environment, and the same goes for his use of colour. His personal visual language is never completely abstract, nor figurative, his works with colour usually arise intuitively and always from perception. The influence of a colour on the form of a structure or sculpture or on the interaction with a space or architecture defines the perception of it.

Johan Gelper (b.1980) is an artist currently living in Ghent, Belgium whose work is a synthesis of the natural with industrial and geometric elements with organic forms. His sculptures can be assembled and disassembled, and each piece grows from the previous ones. He almost always builds his playful assemblages from existing materials. They are airy objects, resembling a drawing or a simple scribble. His strength lies in the assemblage of loose, anomalous elements into an image that clearly shows cohesion. Existing forms and objects suddenly take on an entirely different meaning in a new context.

Poesía Geométrica

The artist Johan Gelper exposes his artistic vision with a colorful and almost playful proposal: a fusion between the industrial and the natural, the geometric and the organic. His sculptures are like “detachable spatial drawings”. A dynamic and elegant work that establishes a connection between the immaterial and the reality of tangible objects.

Duets  is a term from the world of music or dance. But dialogues often arise, in very diverse forms, also between visual works of art. You discover them within an artist's oeuvre, but also throughout art history or across different art forms. The Duets exhibition started from that idea. As a visitor you will notice the duets yourself. They are often very clearly and consciously created, sometimes subtle and always open to personal interpretation. A number of artists entered into a concrete dialogue for Duets.

"Everybody in the arts sector has been heavily affected by this situation, but none more than artists. Their status is often unclear and as a result they usually can’t count on government support measures. However, the costs these artists have for their practice, studio and canceled exhibitions, continue to add up." For these reasons, the Ballroom Project still wants to take action and release a digital version of their 2020 edition at their website."

From Sunday 19 April at 14h until Friday 19 June, Ballroom Project offers a curated online sales platform of unique artworks and editions between €75 and €2,500. The artworks in this online catalogue have been selected by participating galleries and artists invited by the organisers of Ballroom.

In this way, the galleries first and foremost want to support artists. For every artwork sold through this platform, Ballroom guarantees that 70% of sales go directly to the artist. The remaining 30% is used to cover transportation, administration and other organisation costs. All prices are VAT inclusive and cover shipping for sales within Belgium. For international sales Ballroom charge a small shipping fee.

"Constellations with borrowed forms" shows a selection of new sculptural components from "demountable spatial drawings" (2007-ongoing). Although light, space, environment and focus are necessary conditions to arrive at "demountable spatial drawings", the coherent making and thinking process makes it possible to let coincidence, interaction and context determine the presentation.

The exhibition LE SUD is composed with Belgian artists or at least artists who are based in Belgium with their artistic practice. Belgium is obviously a connecting factor, but there is more to it. Despite a certain unity in the works, they distinguish themselves from each other in engagement towards materiality and subject matter. The artists often work with raw or manufactured materials that are used or reused. There is nothing fast about their processes and nothing is necessarily certain. It can succeed or fail, until the momentum where the artwork becomes itself, autonomously. Interpreters have often adapted this kind of 'practice' to that of poets and there is a certain truth in that. The carefully chosen words, building lines and verses; there is no excess but rather a meager economy.

V/MSP GALLERY is delighted to continue its collaboration with Johan Gelper and to present some of his latest work in the exhibition “Motion without Movement”. The show contains sculptures, as well as drawings.

Although on first glance Gelpers’ drawings could be considered as studies to his sculptures, they have to be looked at as independent works. Nonetheless, there are strong correlations between those two bodies of his work, as one finds the same references to dadaism, constructivism and kinetic art in the visual and formal language of the drawings, that are also found in his sculptures.  In both Gelper addresses the interaction of figurative and abstract elements, but through his sculptures Gelper also has the possibility to examine the relation between object and space. It is not by coincidence that form, lines and surface, the three major themes of abstract painting, play a major role in his work- in principle, Gelper sees his sculptures as spatial drawings, adaptable to the conditions of the space.

The sculptures are mostly composed of banal materials, found somewhere where they were left unnoticed or thrown away. By including botanical elements such as branches or roots, he also contemplates on the relationship between nature and culture.

While chance plays an important role in the choice of materials, the process of assembly is the exact opposite. The composition is handled meticulously, found parts are cleaned, processed, brought into the correct form, painted or consciously left in the state they are found in, to create a harmonious ensemble, both in form and color. Often this results in seemingly weightless sculptures, symbolizing the contrast between decay and optimization. Fragile, with subtle lines and biomorphic forms meandering with natural movement to examine the behaviour of an object in space, held together by thin wires or cords. Bows and folds of the more stable materials enhance the feel of a kinetic object. However, in this case, the spectator is the moving object while the sculpture rests fixed in space.

‘Abstract Connections’ stelt vier Belgische kunstenaars centraal.
