The practice of Belgian artist Johan Gelper develops from in situ installations, assemblages and drawings, exploring the potentialities of the movement. Interacting with the surrounding space, his sculptures provoke a perceptive instability. Fascinated by biomorphic forms, and vegetative in particular, the artist erects organic compositions, consisting of fragile objects (umbrellas, fans, plastic tubes, brooms…). The tour de force of these assemblages lies in an injection of dynamic movement, by unifying seemingly disparate elements creating “drawings in the space”, architectural structures mounted on a precarious base.
As for the strictly speaking graphical work of Johan Gelper, it consists of geometric lines, schemas of mechanical pieces and plants, explicitly inscribed in a concrete volume. The interactions and intersections with other spatial elements propose new architectural forms. Within these intuitive and fortuitous networks composed of arbitrary marks, other three-dimensional shapes aim to twist the traditional system of the third dimension.
Each of these compositions tends to blur the visual and, by extension, spatial reference points of the visitor.

Le pratique de l’artiste belge Johan Gelper se développe à partir d’installations in situ, d’assemblages et de dessins, explorant les potentialités du mouvement. En interaction avec l’espace environnant, ses sculptures provoquent une instabilité perceptive. Fasciné par les formes biomorphiques, notamment végatales, l’artiste érige des compositions organiques, constituées d’objets fragiles (parapluies, ventilateurs, tubes en plastique, balais…). Le tour de force de ces assemblages consiste à insuffler un mouvement dynamique, en unifiant des éléments en apparence heteroclites créant des « dessins dans l’espace », des structures architecturées et montées sur un socle précaire.
Quant à la création à proprement parler graphique de Johan Gelper, elle se compose de lignes géométriques, de schéma de pièces mécaniques et végétales, explicitement inscrits dans un volume concret. Les interactions et intersections avec d’autres éléments spatiaux proposent de nouvelles formes architecturales. A l’intérieur de ces réseaux intuitifs et accidentels composés de marques arbitraires, d’autres formes tridimensionnelles visent à tordre le système classique de la troisième dimension.
Chacune de ces compositions tend à brouiller les repères visuels et, par extension, spatiaux du visiteur.

Het werk van de Belgische kunstenaar Johan Gelper ontwikkelt zich vanuit in situ installaties, assemblages en tekeningen die de mogelijkheden van beweging onderzoeken. In interactie met de omringende ruimte veroorzaken zijn sculpturen bij de toeschouwer een perceptie van instabiliteit. Gefascineerd door biomorfe, met name plantaardige vormen, richt de kunstenaar organische composities op, gemaakt met fragiele voorwerpen (paraplu’s, ventilators, plastic buizen, …). De kracht van deze assemblages komt van de dynamische beweging waarbij elementen met een wonderlijke vorm “ruimtelijke tekeningen” of architecturale structuren worden, gebouwd op wankele sokkels.
Johan Gelper’s grafische beeldtaal bestaat uit geometrische lijnen en schema’s van mechanische en plantaardige onderdelen die expliciet in een concreet volume worden geplaatst. De interacties en intersecties met andere ruimtelijke elementen leiden tot nieuwe architectuurvormen. Binnen deze intuïtieve en toevallige netwerken van willekeurige markeringen zorgen andere driedimensionale vormen voor een spanning binnen het klassieke systeem van de derde dimensie.
Elk van deze composities poogt bij de toeschouwer zijn visuele, en bij uitbreiding zijn ruimtelijke referenties te verwonderen.
